London 2012

There are many opportunities for the City and District of St Albans to benefit from London hosting the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

A 2012 steering group has been established to identify how the District will maximize the opportunities the 2012 Games will bring. (For a list of stakeholders please see attached list)

A series of community consultations will take place between July – December 2008 to identify community perceptions and ideas:[images/2012 - 1]

  • Stakeholders (Phase 1 - Completed)
  • Stakeholders (Phase 2 – Wider stakeholders)
  • Primary Schools (KS2)
  • Secondary Schools (KS3 & 4)
  • Further Education
  • Youth Council
  • Herts Voice
  • Local Residents (Local Roadshows)

To date a number of key aims are emerging:

  • Raising the profile of the City and District of St Albans, demonstrating that the District is a creative, inclusive ad welcoming place to live, visit and do business.
  • To improve the sporting infrastructure within the District to support young people who have the ability to move from community to world class sport.
  • Use the games to achieve core ambitions of our communities, relating to increased participation in sport and cultural activities, improved health and community development.

Legacy Outcomes for the City and District

  • Increase in the number of adults, children and young people taking part in regular physical activity
  • Increase the number of volunteers working in the arts, sport and disability
  • Increase the number of visitors to the District
  • Increase economic activity
  • Increase the number of people taking part in cultural activities
  • Inspire young people to get active, volunteer and get involved in their communities
  • Improve sports and recreational facilities/provisions
  • Attract new funding into the District to enhance sporting and cultural provisions

Once the consultation process is complete, a 5 year action plan will be produced detailing clear aims, objectives and outcomes for the City and District of St Albans. The action plan will be presented to O&S before being launch in January 2009. The action plan will be implemented throughout the Cultural Olympiad and beyond the games to 2013.

There will be an opportunity to have your say on the 2012 plans for the District via the consultation form on this site.
